Cane growers' meet on May 23

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: Sugarcane farmers from South India will hold a conference here on May 23 and press for their demands, including a better remunerative price for their produce.

A preliminary meeting of sugarcane cultivators was held in the city on Tuesday as a run up to the South India conference under the leadership of Kurubur Shantakumar.

The farmers listed out their grievances and demands and the meeting will take up issues germane to strengthening of the sugar industry with the authorities concerned. A key demand will be to shift the burden of transportation charges from farmers to the Government and give relief to the farmers to that extent. It was also resolved to seek a minimum support price of Rs. 1,600 for a tonne of sugarcane and restrict the entry of private players into the sugar industry.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is likely to inaugurate the conference and delegates include sugarcane cultivators from Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
