KATHMANDU: A three-wheeler carrying private school students plunged into an irrigation canal in eastern Nepal killing 13 students. The vehicle was carrying 25 students. While some of the students swam to safety, some were rescued by locals and police. The injured are undergoing treatment in Dharan and are out of danger. The three-wheeler veered off the road and plunged into the canal at around 9 am. It is not clear what led to the accident. The driver fled the scene. The principal of the school is also not available for comment. The canal supplies water from the Saptakoshi river to two major food grain producing districts in Terai. A separate canal from the river supplies water for many northern districts in Bihar.
