BELGAUM: A delegation led by former MLA from Khanapur V.Y. Chavan met the Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Monday and urged him to take steps to develop Bhimgad into a wildlife sanctuary. The delegation consisted of leaders and members from different political parties including the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi.
Ecology
The delegation is said to have drawn the attention of the Chief Minister towards the threat to the ecology of the Bhimgad forests in Khanapur taluk following a few individuals purchasing vast tracts of lands close to the historical Bhimgad Fort. The delegation urged the Chief Minister to take steps to put the Shri Bhagyalaxmi Saharakari Sakkare Karkhane in Khanapur back on track. They said there was about 1.80 to 1.85 lakh tonnes of sugarcane available in Khanapur taluk and lives of thousands of farmers depended on the factory.
Uranium exploration
The delegation also pointed out that the Centre had taken up uranium exploration in Deshnur village of Bailhongal taluk, which would force displacement of villagers of Deshnur and four other villages. The delegation opposed such a move stating that it would be impractical and add to the problems of the people of the taluk.
