DHARWAD: Noted critic G.S. Amur who completed 81 years was felicitated by well-wishers and writers at a function held here on Monday. Writer Giraddi Govindraj said Dr. Amur brought into the world of criticism discipline and commitment. He also breathed life into it by advocating a new way of looking at literary works. He said Dr. Amur led a disciplined life and this quality influenced his work. "We are fortunate to have such a scholar, who has dedicated valuable time to Kannada," he said. Dr. Govindraj described the nature of Dr. Amur's criticism. "His criticism is ripe and sharp," he said. M.G. Hegde, a professor, spoke about Dr. Amur. Veteran poet Channaveer Kanavi felicitated Dr. Amur and his wife.
Serve society
Responding to the felicitation, Dr. Amur became nostalgic and recalled his days of "Vaaraanna". He said he was trying to serve society by dedicating his life to the literary world. "Reading gives us experience and helps us have clear thoughts. For a critic reading is crucial. If a critic does not read, his criticism becomes stale," he said. Writer Siddhaling Pattanashetty made the introductory remarks. V.S. Kulkarni, a student of Dr. Amur, recalled his association with his teacher. Veena Shantheswhara, Arya, Shamasundar Bidarkundi, Malati Pattanashetty and others were present.
