The move is aimed at checking accidents

HUBLI: In the wake of increasing number of road accidents in the twin cities owing to over-speeding, the Hubli-Dharwad police commissionerate has fixed the speed limit on various roads.

In a release issued here on Monday, Narayan Nadamani, Police Commissioner, had warned vehicle owners against exceeding the speed limit. Offenders would be strictly dealt with, he said in the release.

The speed limit for various stretches in the twin cities has been fixed as follows:

It is 40 km an hour for the stretch between Dharwad JSS College and University of Agricultural Sciences; 60 km an hour JSS College, Dharwad to Hosur in Hubli; 40 km an hour for Hosur in Hubli to CBT, Gokul Road, Club Road, Station Road, Gadag Road and on all important roads in Hubli.

It may be recalled here that that during a recent coordination committee meeting of various departments, which was convened to discuss the overall development of the twin cities, the issue of the increase in number of road accidents and the need for imposing of a speed limit was raised.

Gadgets

The police commissionerate has recently acquired gadgets, including instruments to help ascertain the speed at which a vehicle is moving.

The commissionerate is also taking steps to streamline traffic in the twin cities.

Recently it issued an order banning city buses from dropping and picking up passengers in places other than stipulated bus stops. It has also started fining vehicle owners for parking their vehicles in no parking areas.

After the commissionerate expressed its inability to take up marking of lanes, parking areas and pedestrian crossings owing to lack of funds, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation had come forward to bear the expenses involved in the works.
