N. Sudhakar Babu, winner of the S.K. Narasimhan Memorial chess tournament.
Chennai: International Master N. Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank, with 7.5 points, won the S.K. Narasimhan Memorial FIDE-rated chess tournament at the Hall of Chess, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, on Tuesday. He was the only player not to lose a single game in the tournament.
Sudhakar was held to a draw in 18 moves by Ajay Srikanth, the State under-11 champion in the 11th round. Ja Gireman, the under-9 State champion from Coimbatore, held top seed and International Master R.R. Laxman to a draw in 93 moves. A.V. Sriramulu, founder secretary, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, gave away the prizes in the presence of Grandmaster R.B. Ramesh. The results (11th round): B. Adhiban (6.5) bt Pon N. Krithika (4); M. Shyam Sundar (5.5) drew with Ashwin Jayaram (6); R.R. Laxman (6.5) drew with Ja Gireman (1); Ajay Srikanth (2.5) drew with Sudhakar Babu (7); K. Gunasekaran (bye). Final placings: 1. N. Sudhakar Babu (7.5); 2. T.U. Navin Kanna (7); 3-5. R.R. Laxman, K. Gunasekaran, B. Adhiban (6.5 each); 6. Ashwin Jayaram (6); 7. M. Shyam Sundar (5.5); 8. Pon N. Krithika (4); 9. Ajay Srikanth (2.5); 10. P. Uthra (2); 11. Ja Gireman (1).
