A. Na. Kru. Award for G.S. Shivarudrappa

BANGALORE: A. Na. Kru. Prathishtana, a literary foundation named after popular Kannada novelist the late A.N. Krishna Rao, has selected the well-known poet G.S. Shivarudrappa for the annual A. Na. Kru. Nirman Award for 2006.

The award, sponsored by the real-estate company Nirman Shelters Private Ltd., comes with a purse of Rs. 50,001. It will be presented in the last week of June in Bangalore.

Mathew George assumes charge at ITI

Bangalore: Mathew George has assumed charge as Director (Finance) of the Indian telecom major ITI Ltd.

The company said in a statement here that Mr. George had served in various capacities in the telecom sector. Mr. George served as Deputy Director-General (Expenditure Finance) and Financial Adviser in the Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata and Chennai circles. Prior to joining ITI, he was Principal General Manager (Finance) of BSNL Kerala Circle, the statement said. — Special Correspondent

Woman doctor

found dead

TUMKUR: The body of a doctor was found hanging in her house on 3rd Cross, Ashoknagar, here on Tuesday. The police identified her as Seema, 28, who was married on May 4. She hailed from Sira taluk in the district. The police have registered a case of unnatural death. — Staff Correspondent

Tourism meet to be

held in Mysore

MYSORE: Karnataka Tourism Expo 2006 will be held in Mysore on May 15 and 16 to explore and tap the tourism potential of the region. The conference is being held under the auspices of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the State Government.

In a press release, the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that Mysore was renowned for its royal splendour and heritage. It was to highlight this splendour and market it globally that the event was being held, it said. — Special Correspondent

DSS criticises

officials' suspension

Bangalore: The Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) has criticised the suspension of Legislative Assembly Secretary T. Rajanna on the charge that he had committed serious irregularities.

DSS president N. Murthy termed the suspension anti-Dalit, illegal and described it as witch-hunting. The suspension had exposed the simmering differences between officers of the upper castes and Scheduled Castes, he charged. Mr. Rajanna was the first Scheduled Caste officer to become Assembly Secretary, which was not liked by many. He urged the Speaker, Krishna, to revoke the suspension. — Staff Reporter

Killed in accident

HASSAN: One person died at the Hassan Bus Stand on Tuesday after being hit by a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus. The police gave the name of the dead as Pradeep (24), a resident of Halasulige village, Sakleshpur. The police said he was seriously injured when the driver was backing up into the bus shelter.

Health check-up

BELLARY: Inmates of the Stree Sevaniketan were subjected to a health check-up on Tuesday as part of the World Red Cross Day.

The programme, which was organised by the District Red Cross Society in association with VIMS, District Health Department and Bellary AIDS Prevention Society, was inaugurated by Tekur Ramanath, vice-president of the society. Dr. S.J.V. Mahipal, who is also a vice-president, presided over.

Cases booked

HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Police on Monday booked 29 cases against autorickshaw drivers for not installing fare meters. They also booked 250 cases against vehicle owners for various offences and a total of Rs. 30,800 as fine was collected from them. The police also found 31 trucks carrying more than the permitted quantity of manganese ore. They were seized and the cases were handed over to the Regional Transport Officer and officials of Department of Mines and Geology, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Additional buses

MYSORE: The KSRTC will ply additional buses to B.R. Hills from Wednesday in view of the Brahmarathotsava of Biligiri Ranganathaswamy scheduled for May 11.

A press release said the KSRTC would deploy an additional 70 buses to B.R. Hills from Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Kollegal, Nanjangud and Yelandur.
