Staff Correspondent

They include a comprehensive English-Kannada dictionary

  • Encyclopaedias on zoology, folklore among publications
  • They were completed in a record time of 10 months
  • Three more encyclopaedias to be released soon

MYSORE: Three encyclopaedias, an analysis of Kuvempu's works, Epigraphia Karnataka and a comprehensive English-Kannada dictionary, which are all major publications of the University of Mysore, will be released by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa here on Thursday.

University Vice-Chancellor J. Shashidhar Prasad told presspersons here on Tuesday that these publications were an important achievement by scholars at the university and would come in handy for students, scholars and the general public.

The three encyclopaedias are on zoology, folklore and the revised edition of the encyclopaedia on Karnataka. Besides, the CD versions of the 14-volume Kannada encyclopaedia and the English-Kannada dictionary will also be released on the occasion.

Director of the Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies Arvind Malagatti said the CD version of the Kannada encyclopaedia contains the digitised version of the 14 volumes brought out so far, running into 14,000 pages. It contains 15,000 articles, 9,500 photographs, 154 audio recordings, 388 pieces of video footage and 18 animations.

Dr. Malagatti said the university was proud to bring out an encyclopaedia in Kannada, which has no parallel in any other Indian language.

He said the university launched an ambitious programme of bringing out an encyclopaedia in Kannada in 1970. So far, it had brought out 14 volumes of the general encyclopaedia. Thirty volumes had been planned in all, he said.

Stating that the zoology and folklore encyclopaedias had been completed in a record time of 10 months, he said quality had not been compromised. Specialists on the subjects had assisted the university in bringing out the encyclopaedias.
