Stem cell research facility to be set up

HYDERABAD: The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, in collaboration with the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, will set up a new facility for stem cell research at Uppal. CCMB Director Lalji Singh said the Department of Science and Technology had sanctioned Rs. 22 crores for the purpose. - Special Correspondent

Re-exam deadline

HYDERABAD: The last date for payment of fee for seventh class re-examinations to be held next month is June 14 without penal fee and June 17 with a fine of Rs. 10. The fee is to be paid to the headmaster of the school concerned. - Special Correspondent

Legislation on MFIs

Srikakulam: The Government would bring in legislation in the coming Assembly session to monitor and regulate the functioning of Micro Finance Institutions in the State, said Minister for Revenue and Relief Dharmana Prasada Rao on Tuesday. He was addressing a Praja Patham meeting in Vatsalavalasa village of Gara mandal, 30 km. from here. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The results of part time PG entrance examination - 2006 of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) have been declared. Results can be seen on university website www.jntu.ac.in, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Officials dismissed

HYDERABAD: The Government has dismissed from service three officials of Andhra Pradesh State Trading Corporation following conviction in a bribe case registered by the ACB. The dismissed officials are M. Satyanarayana, Assistant Manager, R. Subash Reddy, Deputy Manger, and R. Rayappa. They have been convicted of pocketing dealers' commission in the sale of Lepakshi Nandi notebooks and sentenced to a year's rigorous imprisonment. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Pochaiah Maraty has been elected president of Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University Teachers' Association for 2006-07. The other office-bearers are: K.S. Sudhakar, B. Vidyasagar, E. Man killed

KADAPA: One Mangali Venkatesh fatally stabbed Kallutla Siva Reddy (28) of Kondakalva village in Peddamudiyam village in Jammalamadugu constituency on Monday night when the deceased refused to lend him Rs. 50. Reddy was rushed to a private hospital at Nossam village where he succumbed to injuries. - Staff Reporter

Trampled by elephants

KADAPA: A tribal couple of Chittoor district was trampled to death by wild elephants when they ventured into the Mudumpadu forest in Tsundupalle mandal for collecting cane. Residents of Pincha area found the highly decomposed bodies of basket weavers Regya Naik (55) and his wife Rupili Bai (50), of Jilledumanda Peddabidiki in Chittoor district. Forest officials detected footprints of pachyderms at the place. - Staff Reporter

Open varsity exams

HYDREABAD: The first and second year postgraduate annual examinations of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University will be held in August. The first year exams will commence on August 8 and second year exams on August 21. The last date for submission of registration forms at study centres is June 15. - Special Correspondent

KADAPA: G. Janardhana Raju, assistant professor of Industrial and Production Engineering in KSRM College of Engineering was awarded Ph.D. by JNTU for his thesis on `Development of information systems for managerial decision-making in some engineering industries'. Staff Reporter

Awarded life term

for killing wife

ELURU: Fast Court Judge I. Ramesh on Tuesday awarded a life imprisonment to P. Sanyasi Rao of Sriparru in Eluru rural mandal for burning his wife Parantalu alive. According to the prosecution, Sanyasi Rao doused his wife with kerosene and killed her in 2001 by suspecting her fidelity.

Telecom award

ELURU: Palacole telegraph office in West Godavari district has been chosen for the national level award of `Utkrust Tar Sewa Purskaar' for 2006-07 in recognition of its best customer services. L. Anantram, General Manager, West Godavari Telecom District, will receive the award from Union Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran on May 17, the World Telecom Day, in New Delhi. By franchising the telegraph services through STD public telephone operators, the Palacole telegraph office has saved Rs. 2.34 lakhs from May 2005 to March, 2006, the General Manager told reporters. — Staff Reporter

Crash courses for jobless women

ELURU: Durgabai Mahila Sisu Vikasa Kendram at Tadikalapudi has invited applications from jobless women for admission in summer special courses. The special courses in which training is offered include yoga, music, self-defence, spoken English, personality development and food processing. The candidates in 18-35 age group are eligible for admission.

`Maha padayatra'

enters Kakinada

Kakinada : State Mala Maha Sabha president Mallela Venkata Rao has made it clear that imposing restrictions of any kind in quota implementation will not be tolerated and not at all acceptable to them.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday on the occasion of his `Malala Aatmagourava Maha Padayatra' reaching the city, he said the reservations guaranteed by the Constitution should be implemented without any deviation or restriction. The padayatra would conclude in July with Malas all over the State laying siege to Hyderabad, he said. - Correspondent

Drama contests

PARADIP : Satya Prasad Sahoo and Sumitra Swain of Saraswati Vidyamandir were adjudged best actor and best actress respectively at the sixth inter-school drama competitions-2006 held under the aegis of Paradip Port Trust's Jagannath Lalit Kala Sansad at Jaydev Sadan here. PPT Chairman K. Raghuramaiah inaugurated the competitions on Tuesday and Deputy Conservator of PPT Capt. D.K. Mohanty attended the valedictory function on Friday. Jyothi Ranjan Das of Saraswati Vidyamandir won the best script and best direction awards. Sumitra Padhi of Municipal Girls' High School won the judge's award.-Correspondent
