CHENNAI : An adult tiger, which strayed into a human habitation in a village in Kanyakumari District was captured by the Forest officials and brought to the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, on Tuesday. C.K. Sreedharan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, said more than a fortnight ago the male `big cat' entered Panagudi village Boothapandi Range in the district. A 55-year-old cattle grazer who encountered the animal, tried to shoo it away. The animal mauled him. In the following days the animal lifted nine head of cattle and five goats from a cattle pen in the village. Agitated by the straying marauder, the locals demanded security measures from the Forest authorities. Due to this the authorities stepped up vigil and perambulation, which stopped the animal from entering the village. The officials monitored the movement of the tiger and they identified two streams through which the animal frequented the village. So two traps were laid along the water bodies. Talking about the health condition of the animal, N.S Manoharan, Forest Veterinary Officer, Coimbatore, who tranquillised the animal and brought it to the Zoo said the animal was aged about 14 years. It had deep lacerated wound on its left shoulder, a sceptic wound in the right paw and another wound in the neck. Another tiger could have inflicted injuries during a turf fight, he said. The trapped big cat was transported in a lorry and the cage was covered with branches of a neem tree and water was sprinkled on the animal at regular intervals, he added.
