Private colleges asked to choose between CET, TNPCEE marks

K. Ramachandran

They should go by only one merit list, insists committee

  • No admission should be made by any college before May 30
  • The forms should be in the name of the consortium of professional colleges

CHENNAI: All private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu have been asked to exercise their option on whether they are adopting the marks of the common entrance test (CET) to be conducted by the Consortium or the test conducted by the State (TNPCEE), before May 30.

No admission should be made by any college before May 30, the Justice S.S. Subramani Committee has ruled.

For admissions under the management quota, the colleges should use only one merit list and not both. They should not issue individual application forms.

The forms should be in the name of the consortium of professional colleges, the agency to conduct the CET for the management quota.

The common application forms costing Rs. 400 should be available in the office of the consortium, the individual colleges and the Justice Subramani Committee in Chennai, said the Committee's order issued on Tuesday.

The order detailed the mode of admissions to be adopted by the colleges for the management quota.

Justice Subramani, who chairs the committee for conduct of a common entrance test for private colleges, said the Supreme Court had directed that the single window system (SWS) be followed. So, none of the private educational institutions was entitled to admit students without following the SWS. Mere surrender of (some) seats would not entitle a college to admit students for the remaining seats on their own.

    Centralised counselling

Such colleges, while admitting students to the management quota, also would have to follow a centralised counselling and SWS depending on the option exercised or deemed to have been exercised.

The colleges should exercise their option of which marks they are going to use before May 30, the date on which the sale of application forms and prospectus begins.
