First poll results to be out before noon

Special Correspondent

Counting to start before noon

Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto says arrangements are in place for counting.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first results of the general elections in Kerala will be out before noon on Thursday. Lead positions will be known much earlier.

Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto told presspersons here on Tuesday that counting would start at 8 a.m. on Thursday at 140 counting centres — one for each constituency. The counting centres have been arranged at 124 places.

Ms. Netto said that though the counting of postal ballots would start first, enumeration of votes recorded through the electronic voting machines would commence immediately thereafter. There would be 14 counting tables at each centre. Besides the returning officer, an observer of the Election Commission would be present at each centre.

She said the results would be available to the public through the official websites http://www.ceo.kerala.gov.in and http://trend.kerala.nic.in besides the website of the Election Commission of India http://www.eci.gov.in.

She said that though there were some reports critical of the behaviour of some observers during the campaign phase, there had been no written complaints against them. Some observers had been replaced for various reasons.

There were hardly any complaints about the conduct of the elections. But there were a few about deletion of names from the voters' lists. The largest number of complaints was about violation of code of conduct by the candidates and the Government, including those on appointment of officials. In a few cases, vehicles used for campaign without authorisation had been seized.
