Vandana Shiva on seed campaign drive

Vittana Chaitanya Yatra is geared towards enlightening farming community

    ANANTAPUR: Noted activist on farmers' issues, Vandana Shiva would take up an awareness campaign on seeds in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka starting from May 10, State president of CPI-affliated, AP Rythu Sangham affiliated K. Ramakrishna said here on Tuesday.

    Her awareness yatra in the State would begin on May 12 up to 18, he stated.

    Itinerary

    After the launch at Sevagram in Maharashtra on May 10, the yatra would enter the State on May 12. `Vittana Chaitanya Yatra' would be held on May 12 at Adilabad followed at Warangal on May 14, Karimnagar on May 16 and Hyderabad on May 18 before it enters Karnataka.

    She would hold a similar campaign in the remaining states across the country in the second phase. Seed companies, particularly multinationals were exploiting farmers in the country, Mr. Ramakrishna alleged. Ms. Shiva would create awareness among the farming community on seeds, fertilisers and pesticides. Citing an example, the APRS leader said Monsanto-Mahyco was collecting a royalty of Rs. 1,800 to 2,200 per acre on the sale of BT cotton seed in India.
