Echo of death of State Minister's aide

TINDIVANAM: Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and his father, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss, have been named in a case of murder in Tindivanam, Tamil Nadu.

This follows a complaint from the State Education Minister, C.Ve. Shanmugham, after an aide was hacked to death before his residence on Monday night.

Twenty others, including the PMK candidate for the Tindivanam constituency, N.M. Karunanidhi (pitted against Mr. Shanmugham), and Dr. Ramadoss' relatives, Dr. Parasuraman, Srinivasan, N.R. Raghu and Pratiban, have also been named in the case.

The police have registered the case under various counts such as physical assault, rioting, arson and murder under Sections 147, 148, 302, 307, 506/2, 323, 324 and 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code (Crime No. 164, 09-05-2006).

The attack by a group of people took place when Mr. Shanmugham was in discussion with his partymen.

The Minister escaped by hiding beneath his car. After killing Muruganandam (40), the group damaged some cars. When the Minister's gunman was alerted, they fled the scene.

Inspector-General of Police S.R. Jangid, DIG of Police Sanjay Arora, and Superintendent of Police K. Periaiah reached the spot with a large posse of policemen.

AIADMK workers staged protests in the town. Democratic Progressive Alliance leaders alleged that the Government "misused" the police by including the Union Minister and the PMK founder in the list of accused. A DPA delegation called on Governor S.S. Barnala on Tuesday night and presented a memorandum, protesting against the filing of the case.
