Re-polling ordered in Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram districts

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Re-polling has been ordered in booth number 152 (general) at Kanniseripudur in Virudhunagar Assembly constituency following complaint of "faulty" electronic voting machine.

Voter turnout in the 17 (A) register and the number of total votes polled did not tally due to the faulty machine, sources said. There was a difference of 113 votes.

In a statement, the Returning Officer said re-polling would be conducted on Wednesday from 7 a.m. till 5 p.m. at St. Xavier's Elementary School and all eligible voters could cast their votes.

The district recorded 72.3 per cent of turnout in Monday's polling. While Rajapalayam constituency registered the highest turnout of 73.48 per cent, Virudhunagar, where re-polling has been ordered, recorded the lowest of 71.48 per cent.

The voter turnout in other constituencies is: Aruppukottai and Sivakasi 72 per cent each, Sattur 72.67 and Srivilliputtur 72.5.

In the turnout, women outnumbered men in Aruppukottai and Sattur constituencies.

Following is the number of votes polled by men and women and grand total (in brackets are the total number of voters in each constituency):

Aruppukottai: 56,499 (77,848), 83,637 (59,320) and 1,61,485 (1,15,819)

Sattur: 72,241 (98,851), 75,975 (1,05,103) and 1,48,216 (2,03,954)

Virudhunagar: 65,513 (89,380), 64,668 (92,844) and 1,30,181 (1,82,224)

Sivakasi: 93,071 (1,24,372), 89,871 (1,29,362) and 1,82,942 (2,53,734)

Srivilliputtur: 67,918 (90,993), 67,227 (95,212) and 1,35,145 (1,86,205)

Rajapalayam: 75,253 (99023), 72,167 (1,01592) and 2,00,615 (1,47,420)

Ramanathapuram

The Election Commission has ordered re-polling in booth number 7 coming under Paramakudi constituency and booth number 46 of Thiruvadanai constituency.

District Election Officer K. Sellamuthu said re-polling would be held at the Panchayat Union School (booth number 7) and Manickam Middle School in Devakottai (booth number 46).

The poll would start at 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Re-polling was ordered following malfunctioning of electronic voting machines.

All voters confined to the above said booths were asked to cast their votes again.
