Pro-Reservation Front to stage rally

Staff Reporter

Bid to put pressure on Government to implement reservation

NEW DELHI: All-India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations Chairman Udit Raj on Tuesday announced that a rally will be staged at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday to put pressure on the United Progressive Alliance Government to implement reservation for Other Backward Classes in Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Management and universities across the country.

The rally that will be convened under the banner of Arakshan Samarthak Morcha (Pro-Reservation Front) also aims to counter the anti-reservation agitation by students in the Capital recently.

"We want anti-reservationists to understand that they should not agitate against the Government's proposed decision to reserve seats for OBCs in institutes of higher education in the interest of social justice and harmony. The Pro-Reservation Front strongly supports Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh's proposal to introduce 27 per cent reservation in Central universities for OBCs. In case, the Government dithers on this important issue, then we will be left with no alternative but to organise nationwide protest demonstrations in support of the reservation," added Dr. Raj at a press conference here.

Stating that all talk of merit getting diluted by the anti-reservationists was nothing but an excuse to keep out OBC students from institutes of higher education, Dr. Raj said many students get admission into private medical and engineering colleges by paying huge capitation fees and a number of students after passing out from IIT seek employment overseas.
