`Residents' participation in policy implementation must'

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and Administrator of Union Territory of Chandigarh S.F. Rodrigues on Tuesday urged the members of the Administrator's Advisory Council and the residents to participate actively in the implementation of various policies and programmes by meticulously adhering to the existing provisions of law and established norms for pursuing socio-economic development.

Presiding over the meeting of the Council, he said that the Chandigarh Administration had launched several programmes for upgrading the civic life of the people and ensuring that Chandigarh truly remained the City Beautiful. There should be no violations or overriding of set rules and procedures.

The General said that the Administration had completed survey of vacant sites and a detailed analysis was being done for their best profitable use, It had also tried to put all properties of Chandigarh on its website and in the next two months every detail would be available.

Expressing anguish over illegal encroachments on government land by certain unscrupulous elements, he asserted that there would be no compromise on this issue and the law would prevail. He urged the Council members to sit together and find an answer to this grave problem through dialogue with the heads of various religious organizations responsible for illegally encroaching on government land.

He added that the Administration had evolved an action plan for setting up a Milk Village near Maloya to accommodate about 20,000 cows and buffaloes.

It had also taken various long-term and short-term measures for improving power and water supply. Possibilities were being explored for the generation of power and supplementing water supply from Sukhna Lake and other water bodies in the process of creation besides arranging for more electricity from Himachal Pradesh. He appealed to the people to use water and power resources judiciously to meet the growing demand.

Mayor Surinder Singh and other members highlighted various issues of public interest. Senior officers including Adviser to Administrator Lalit Sharma, Home Secretary Krishna Mohan and Deputy Commissioner R.K. Rao were among those present.
