CHENNAI: Chennai has recorded a 64.37 per cent polling in its 14 constituencies on Monday's Assembly elections. According to the district election office, Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar in North Chennai recorded the highest turnout of 70.11 per cent, with more than 1.6 lakh voters having exercised their franchise. In terms of the number of votes cast, Anna Nagar, which has a maximum number of voters in its rolls in the city, topped with 2.16 lakh votes. The overall percentage was 61.5. The North Chennai constituencies presented a picture of contrast, with Dr.Radhakrishnan Nagar, Royapuram and Perambur (reserved) topping the list with 70.11 per cent, 69.04 per cent and 67.9 per cent respectively. However, Harbour recorded the lowest turnout of 57.11 per cent. In all, 1.78 lakh voters exercised their franchise. The break-up for all the constituencies is as follows: Royapuram-95,087 valid votes (69 per cent); Harbour-60,011 votes (57.11); Dr.Radhakrishnan Nagar-1,67,759 votes (70.11); Park Town-72,914 (62.33); Perambur-1,82,627 votes (67.99); Purasawalkam-1,92,344 votes (65.37); Egmore (reserved)-79,325 votes (64.88); Anna Nagar-2,16,927 votes (61.5); T.Nagar-1,52,714 votes (62.93); Thousand Lights-1,07,964 votes (63.71); Chepauk-67,082 votes (63.75); Triplicane-85,585 votes (64.60); Mylapore- 1,38,619 votes (58.95); and Saidapet-1,64,347 votes (66.16). The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered a repoll at a polling station in T.P.Chatram falling under Anna Nagar constituency after election officials were unable to retrieve data from a malfunctioning electronic voting machine (EVM). According to sources, an EVM unit placed in polling booth 53 M at a Corporation school on Gujji Street in T.P.Chatram developed problems when it accidentally fell down on Monday afternoon. The unit was replaced and polling continued. However, officials have not been able to retrieve data from the first machine.
