Talks on oil prices today

Cut taxes on oil products instead of raising oil prices: CPI

  • Petroleum Minister not in favour of increasing kerosene and LPG prices
  • Cut excise duty on petrol and diesel to soften burden on oil firms: Petrofed

New Delhi: The Government will begin formal consultations with the Left parties on Wednesday on the need to raise the prices of petroleum products. But informal talks have already hit a roadblock with the CPI firmly opposing any such proposal.

CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta told Petroleum Minister Murli Deora here on Tuesday that taxation on oil products should be cut rather than raising oil prices.

Mr. Deora told newspersons that discussions would begin on Wednesday with the Left parties on the oil price issue in the wake of world oil prices reaching $75 a barrel. He was not, however, in favour of increasing the prices of kerosene and LPG.
