Project to improve quality of textiles

Coimbatore: Bharathiar University will carry out a project on wear-resistant surface coatings on textile machinery components in collaboration with the Department of Textiles and Handlooms, Government of Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore region, at an estimate of Rs. 37 lakhs.

A release said that the Department of Science and Technology had sanctioned the project for "preparation, characterisation and performance study" of solid lubricants and wear-resistant surface coatings.

The University said that the Department of Science and Technology had identified a few traditional crafts in the country for improvement and rejuvenation using plasma technology.

In the Southern region, the Department had chosen the textile industry with the intention of enhancing the performance of components using thermal plasma surface coatings on machinery parts.

Reducing friction on surfaces would extend the life of components and improve the quality of textiles.

V. Selvarajan, Head of the Department of Physics at the University, would be the Principal Investigator of the project.

P. V. A. Padmanabhan, Scientific Officer, Laser and Plasma Technology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, and Krishna M. Gupta, Professor, Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) at Powai in Mumbai, would be the consultants for the project, the release said.
