HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (APJUDA) has hailed the High Court verdict striking off the five per cent additional marks allotted to all the candidates who appeared for the qualifying examination for seats in Post Graduate medical courses. APJUDA spokesperson L. Maheshwar told The Hindu on Tuesday that it was a victory for the junior doctors, who vehemently opposed the Government decision to increase the quota for in service candidates. "The increase in marks was a ploy to benefit the in service candidates," Dr. Maheshwar said. "In fact out of the 290 seats reserved for the in service candidates, only 210 had qualified. But, after five marks were added, the number of eligible candidates went up to 330," he said. "The Government cannot add or reduce the qualifying marks in competitive examinations," he contended. "The Government action was illegal and detrimental to the interests of the meritorious non-service candidates", he said. He demanded that 15 per cent of the seats out of the 30 per cent presently reserved for the in service candidates should also be provided to all such PG students, who gave their willingness to work in rural areas after completion of their course.
