Protest against manhandling of postgraduate student at Victoria Hospital

BANGALORE: Junior doctors of Bangalore Medical College (BMC) will boycott work and go on an indefinite strike from Wednesday to protest the alleged manhandling of a postgraduate student by the husband of a woman patient at Victoria Hospital on Tuesday.

BMC Junior Doctors' Association President H.G. Venugopal said that a postgraduate student was accused of sexual abuse and was manhandled after he performed a "normal cardio-respiratory examination" of a woman patient in presence of a woman house surgeon.

Safety

"All the junior doctors, postgraduate students and house surgeons, are shocked by the incident and are afraid of examining the patients. Until the Government ensures the safety of junior doctors, we will boycott OPD and ward duties indefinitely," Dr. Venugopal said in a press release.

However, the junior doctors will attend to emergency and causality duties, he said.

Mr. Venugopal told The Hindu that the junior doctors at Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary; Mysore Medical College, Mysore, and Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli, have extended support to their agitation.
