HYDERABAD: A comprehensive change in the Act of all universities is being planned in order to formulate a Common Act.

Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) Chairman K.C. Reddy said a committee of Vice-Chancellors, former Vice-Chancellors and industrialists would be appointed soon to study the present Acts of different universities and suggest the necessary changes. The stress would be on changes in the academic and administrative structures and the effort is to streamline academics.

Prof. Reddy who chaired meeting of the council attended by several Vice-Chancellors said the meeting discussed on the proposed 21st century Gurukulams and it was decided to start in six centres this year. Options of setting up these centres outside the University campus were being explored. The Centre for Osmania University will either be set up at the University's Observatory in Rangapur in Ranga Reddy district or Bhiknoor in Nizamabad district. The Sri Krishna Devaraya University centre is likely to come up in Srisailam. "We will take a final decision after May 20 when the Vice-Chancellors meet again," Prof. Reddy said.

The Vice-Chancellors also expressed the opinion that academic structures were not flexible and there was a need to give more thrust to inter-disciplinary courses.

V-Cs appointment

Prof. Reddy said parent Vice-Chancellors are likely to be appointed as the in-charge Vice- Chancellors of the three new Universities set up in the three regions of the State. Asutosh Mishra, Principal Secretary, Higher Education, P. Jayaprakash Rao, Vice-Chairman, APSCHE, M.D. Christopher, Secretary, APSCHE and Vice-Chancellors -- V. Gopal Reddy (Kaktiya University), K. Rajagopal (JNTU), L. Venugopal Reddy (AU), S. Jayarama Reddy (SVU), V. Balamohandas (Nagarjuna University), Suleman Siddiqi (OU) were present.
