THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Various programmes have been planned in the city to celebrate the National Technology Day on May 11. Every year May 11 is observed all over the country as the National Technology Day, to remember the remarkable contributions made by the scientists and engineers in the fields of space research, biotechnology, medical sciences and pure sciences and also to draw the attention of the youth to the achievements of the nation. The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) and Terumo Penpol Limited have joined hands to celebrate the National Technology Day this year. Leading scientists and technologists will speak to the student community about the exciting and highly rewarding opportunities that science and technology can offer them, at a function to be held at the Achutha Menon Centre Auditorium, SCTIMST, at 9.30 a.m. A.E.Muthunayagam, executive vice-president of KSCSTE will inaugurate the celebrations. SCTIMST director K. Mohandas will preside. K.R.S. Krishnan, director KSCSTE will deliver the welcome speech. C. Balagopal, managing director of Terumo Penpol, will deliver the keynote address and S. Balram, scientist, SCTIMST, will propose a vote of thanks. Interactive lectures will be conducted after the inaugural session. C.C. Kartha of SCTIMST will speak on `ascent of medical technology,' K.N. Ninan, director of VSSC, on space technology, Suresh Das, head of chemical sciences, Regional Research Laboratory, will speak on `materials for new age.' With the younger generation increasingly attracted towards the area of information technology and management, where heavy pay packets are a major incentive, an introduction to career opportunities in pure sciences has become necessary. At the celebrations organised by the RRL, V. Jnana Gandhi, visiting scientist, Liquid Propulsions System Centre, Bangalore, will deliver the Technology Day lecture at the laboratory auditorium. Director T.K. Chandrasekhar will preside. M.L.P. Reddy will welcome the gathering and K. Harikrishna Bhat will propose a vote of thanks.
