CPI(M) criticises court order on slum dwellers

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday termed as ``singularly inhuman and unjust'' the judgment of the Supreme Court rejecting any relief for slum dwellers living on public land.

Stating that it ``betrays a callous approach to the poor and the homeless,'' the party Polit Bureau said in a statement that people migrate in large numbers to cities as they were either landless or have no means of livelihood in the rural areas.

The statement said if slum dwellers have to be removed from public land it should be incumbent upon the Government to provide them alternative housing sites before they were evicted. The party said it would have been better if the two-member Bench had pointed out the failure of the State to provide the elementary right to housing for its citizens.
