NEW DELHI: The Narmada dam Oversight Group headed by former Comptroller and Auditor-General V.K. Shunglu on Wednesday called on Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz. This was their first meeting with the Minister although they've held four meetings so far.
Group of Ministers
Prof. Soz was part of the Group of Ministers formed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that had visited submergence villages and rehabilitation sites in Madhya Pradesh last month and had submitted a damaging report on the lack of rehabilitation in the State. The group will meet more frequently to chalk out a strategy before they lead the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) teams into the valley on May 19.
Discussions
The group on Wednesday held discussions with the members of the Narmada Valley Development Agency that is responsible for overseeing rehabilitation and resettlement of Narmada dam displaced families. Officials of the Water Resources Ministry and NSSO also participated. The three-member oversight group has been constituted by the Prime Minister to do a survey in the Narmada valley in Madhya Pradesh to ascertain whether rehabilitation of oustees had been done and done in consonance with the Narmada award and Supreme Court orders. It has to submit its report by June-end.
