400-kV lines a boon to State, says KEOF

Radhakrishnan Kuttoor

Plea to allay fears of the public on proposed lines

  • It says the lines are important for the State to get its share from Koodamkulam plant
  • `It will provide the State power on a par with that provided by the Sabarigiri project'
  • Government urged to draw the lines in a way that causes minimum loss and inconvenience to the people

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Kerala Electricity Officers' Federation (KEOF) has called upon the Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCI) and the State Government to take urgent steps to clear the apprehensions of the public on the proposed 400-kV transmission lines from the Koodamkulam Atomic Power Plant in Tamil Nadu to the 400-kV sub-station of the Kerala State Electricity Board at Madakkathara in Thrissur district.

Talking to The Hindu here on Wednesday, KEOF State president S. Babukutty, working president A. Nazarudeen and general secretary V. Santhoshkumar said the laying of the proposed 400-kV lines in a time-bound manner was of prime importance for the State to get its share (11 per cent) of power generated at the Koodamkulam plant when it was commissioned in 2007.

According to the KEOF leaders, a leadership camp of the federation held at Munnar in Idukki district on Tuesday urged the PGCI and the Government to draw the extra high tension lines in such a way that there would be minimum loss and inconvenience to the people.

Mr. Santhoshkumar said the proposed line would provide the State power on a par with that provided by the Sabarigiri project, the second largest hydroelectric power project in the State.

``It is strange that both the PGCI and the State Government appear to be not at all serious about the public protests against the proposed 400-kV lines,'' they said.

The KEOF leaders called upon the authorities to clear the ``public apprehensions that the affected people would not be adequately compensated for their property loss.'' According to them, the PGCI has been providing handsome compensation to the affected parties in such cases.
