CHANDIGARH: Ajay Singh Chautala, Rajya Sabha MP and son of the former Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal chief,Om Parkash Chautala, on Monday rubbished allegations levelled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that his family owned assets worth about Rs. 1,487 crores. Talking to media persons here, Mr.Chautala said that it was obvious that the premier investigation agency was "maligning'' his family at the behest of the Congress Government and the FIR filed by it was not based on "investigations'' but was a copy of the so-called "chargesheet'' submitted by the Congress to the Governor on the eve of the Assembly elections in 2005. It may be recalled that the CBI had raided several properties reportedly owned by the Chautala clan last week and mentioned in the FIR that the family owned disproportionate assets, including cash and jewellery, worth Rs. 1,487 crores. However, Mr.Ajay Chautala maintained that his family had not only been filing Income Tax returns regularly but also disclosing assets in affidavits at the time of contesting elections. "Whatever we own as a family is fully accounted for,'' he asserted. "The properties referred to in the CBI FIR do not belong to us and will request the CBI to give us just 10 per cent of these and retain the rest,'' he added. Replying to a question, he said that he had not received any summons so far from the CBI. He said that his father would be returning to India after undergoing another surgery in the USA. Mr.Chautala, who was addressing his first press conference after returning from the USA, charged that the Congress regime in Haryana had failed on all fronts and the people were openly criticising it. In fact, the CBI raids, the registration of a "false'' case of murder against his brother, indicated that the Hooda regime was acting out of sheer political vendetta.
