A different kind of stag party

For once, it's all about men. Bare-chested, baring their soul and bonding on emotions, the stage is set for a different kind of stag party. On a trip of self-discovery, the Capital will get a chance to coin a new definition for men in the city.

Taking metro-sexuality beyond pedicures and pink "Metrospective" -- an art exhibition presented by Red Earth -- hopes to start a debate about masculinity, metro-sexuality and, of course, men. The first-of-its-kind event, the exhibition has over 30 works in varied styles. From the younger hipper lot of artists to more seasoned ones, the exhibition, which has also mounted in Mumbai last year, is now in Delhi in a new "avataar".

"We have added new works to the exhibition and taken some out. There are also 3-D works and art installations that have been added in this exhibition. Metro-sexuality is a word that has been used by the media so many times. The idea is to stretch the term to masculinity in the city," says Himanshu Verma who has curated the exhibition.

An attempt to really set the ball rolling on the new-found buzzword in world of academia as well as popular culture, the exhibition is really about creating awareness and expanding the notion of masculinity. With different forms of art involved, there will be book readings, film screenings and even discussions. "The academic field has discovered metro-sexuality and is now studying it. The whole idea of metro-sexuality has fractured the old notion of masculinity. Men have started realising that they have feelings, they don't have to be strong all the time and the gender issues are not only about women," says Himanshu.

While it might not be every day that men come together to really talk, Himanshu is hoping to make this a regular feature. An annual "stag party", he believes that it will give men the platform that they are looking for. The exhibition will be on view at Galerie Romain Rolland, Alliance Francaise de Delhi, from May 17 to 21. -- Mandira Nayar
