LONG WAIT: Villagers waiting outside the out-patient department at KIMS in Hubli as the junior doctors' strike entered the second day on Thursday.
HUBLI: With the junior doctors' strike entering the second day on Thursday, services at the out-patient department (OPD) in the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital (KIMS) were affected. With around 300 junior doctors in KIMS keeping away from the OPD, the hospital staff had a difficult time handling patients. However, M.G. Hiremath, Medical Superintendent, KIMS Hospital, said that no patient who required emergency treatment was sent back without being treated from the hospital. "With 300 junior doctors on strike, we had problem attending to patients admitted to the hospital, and some surgeries were affected," he said. The State Government was informed of the junior doctors' strike and their demands, he said. KIMS is a premier government hospital in the North Karnataka region. The usual rush seen at the OPD in KIMS was not seen on Thursday as the news about the junior doctors' strike had reached many. Those who had come to the hospital unaware of the strike had to wait for hours. The junior doctors staged a dharna on the KIMS premises. Then they took out a protest march to the office of the Medical Superintendent and submitted a memorandum listing their demands.
