BHOPAL: A total of 1787 roads are to be constructed this year in the rural areas of Madhya Pradesh under the sixth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna (PGSY). The total length of these roads would be 10,500 kilometres and an amount of Rs. 1800 crores would be spent on this project. The State Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development Narendra Singh Tomar gave this information and said that the State Government was committed to connect every village with road to bring about a change in the lives of the people in the rural areas. Mr. Tomar said that all the 48 districts in the State would be covered under PMGSY and roads left uncovered under this scheme would be constructed with the help of funds received from ADB. A time limit has been set and the officials and concerned agencies have been directed to carry out regular inspections to ensure quality, he added. The Minister said that in the sixth phase of PMGSY, Rs. 1256.80 crores would be spent on 1239 roads, having a combined length of 8180 kilometres. Besides, 548 additional roads having a total length of 2494 kilometres would be constructed with funds received from ADB. Mr. Tomar added that tenders have been invited and the process to start work on these roads would begin soon.
