Mushtaq and Read in angry clash

LONDON: Former Test players Mushtaq Ahmed and Chris Read were involved in an unsavoury incident on the second day of the English county championship match between Sussex and Nottinghamshire at Hove on Thursday.

Umpires Rob Bailey and Graham Burgess will talk to Sussex leg spinner Mushtaq and Notts wicketkeeper Read as part of an investigation into a verbal exchange between the two players, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

The umpires will then report their findings to the ECB, English cricket's governing body.

The two players clashed after Pakistani Mushtaq trapped Read lbw for a duck, the former England keeper apparently unhappy over an earlier appeal.

Read returned to the dressing room but then left to exchange words with Mushtaq, who was fielding on the boundary.

Suggestions of a physical confrontation were played down by the two teams. — Reuters
