NEW DELHI: Succumbing to pressure from the public and meat traders' organisations, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to appeal in the Delhi High Court to allow meat shops to operate in residential areas provided they get clearance from the police and local residents' welfare associations. It is learnt that in its affidavit to be submitted in the court soon, the civic body has mentioned about its new proposal in this regard and is likely to seek clearance from the court. Acting on a court order, the MCD has so far sealed more than 1,600 illegal shops across the Capital but is still finding it difficult to contain the illegal trade. Stating that it was very difficult to check operation of illegal meat shops in the Capital as it required very little paraphernalia, a senior MCD official said many illegal shops continue to function in the city, particularly on road sides. "At present meat shops are allowed only in commercial areas. Since meat is a daily food item, we have got many requests from residents and meat traders to allow meat shops in residential areas also." According to the official, the civic body has prepared a new policy wherein it has decided to allow shops in residential areas provided the police and residents' welfare associations gave their no-objection certificates. "We are going to highlight this point in front of the court and request it to give the go-ahead to this policy as it will not only help people get meat products easily but also check illegal sale of meat across the Capital," the official added.
