KOLLAM: Except for two constituencies in the district, the defeated candidates were trailing almost right from the start of counting of votes for the Assembly elections on Thursday. The two constituencies which gave some anxious moments during counting are Chavara and Neduvathur. In both these constituencies it was a photo finish since the victors won by a small margin of 1,786 and 1,155 votes respectively. At 8 20 a.m., N.K.Premachandran of the LDF was leading at Chavara by 185 votes. A little later, by 8.50 a.m. he was trailing by 265 votes. By 9.30 a.m. the UDF candidate Shibu Baby John was leading by a majority of 462 votes. But by 9.50 a.m. Mr. Premachandran overtook Mr. Shibu by registering a lead of 908 votes. Shortly after 10 a.m., Mr. Premachandran's majority dropped to 408 votes. Fifteen minutes later his majority again climbed to 783 votes. At 10.30 a.m. it dropped to 602 votes and at 10.45 a.m. climbed to 707 votes. But at 10.55 a.m. Mr. Shibu climbed up by registering a lead of 275 votes. His lead then went up to 455 votes by 11 a.m. By 11.15 a.m. Mr. Shibu's lead began steadily dropping and soon afterwards Mr. Premachandran climbed up again and maintained the upper hand to touch 1,786 votes when the counting was over. At Neduvathur, it was the UDF candidate Ezhukone Narayanan who maintained the lead in the beginning.
