Participants to be taught the basic principles of local self-government

KAKINADA: The Lok Satta will be launching `leadership training camps' for the prospective contestants in the ensuing local bodies elections, irrespective of their political affiliations. The first such training camp in the district will be held for two days at Pithapuram on May 17 and 18. Disclosing this at a press conference here on Thursday, Dr Aluri Vijayalakshmi district unit president of the Lok Satta said that the participants would be taught the basic principles of local self-government, the duties and responsibilities and also on the need for providing corruption free governance.

Already twenty persons were given training, as the trainers for conducting the classes at the leadership training camps. She made it clear, that though the Lok Satta was conducting the classes, those that received training need not have any apprehension about their political status.

Fielding candidates

``The Lok Satta will not field any candidate on its label. They are free to fight the panchayat elections on their own either as independents or on as the nominee of a political party.

But what they require is to vow that they would provide corruption free governance which is a pre-requisite'', she clarified.

Dr Chandramouli, zonal coordinator said that they very aim was to provide basic leadership training to about two thousand people to fight the ensuing panchayat elections.

Dr E.R Subrahmanyam district secretary and Paramahamsa, city unit secretary attended.

`Anti-labour' policies

The Congress Government in the State was adopting anti-labour policies, usurping the workers rights and doing great injustice to the working class by diluting the labour laws, alleged J. Venkateswarlu, district general secretary and State committee member of the IFTU here on Thursday.

Addressing the IFTU conference held to express solidarity to jute mill workers of Vizianagaram, he denounced the management's stance in declaring a lockout in Nellimarla jute mill instead of settling the workers demands.

Exploitation alleged

He alleged that the jute mills management was denying statutory minimum wages to the workers and exploiting them. Bangaru Satyanarayana presided over the conference.

Leaders of gas delivery workers union and sawmill workers union attended.
