Valarmathi defeated by DMK's Anbarasan in Alandur

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Alandur Assembly constituency saw the fall of a giant. T.M. Anbarasan of the DMK defeated Rural Industries Minister B. Valarmathi of the AIADMK by a margin of 17,910 votes. While the DMK candidate polled 1,33,232 votes, AIADMK polled 1,15,322 votes.

R. Vijayakumar, a greenhorn, standing on the DMDK ticket got 22,866 votes pushing H. Raja of the BJP to the fourth spot, who polled 9,298 votes.

Jubiliant cadre

Even before the results were officially announced the jubilant DMK cadre burst crackers to celebrate the victory of their candidate. Mr. Anbarasan, beaming with pride, distributed sweets to the people assembled outside the heavily guarded counting centre.

Water scarcity

Speaking to the media, he said the main problem faced by the residents of Alandur is acute water scarcity. In fact in Nanganallur, piped water is supplied once in five days despite good water position. He also wanted to renovate the dilapidated water tank located at Keelkattalai to improve the storage capacity. The Pallavaram Subway caught in a legal wrangle will be looked into and measures taken to remove the legal hurdles, he said.
