`Tulu Samskritika Bhavan' planned

Staff Correspondent

It is estimated to cost Rs. 2.5 crore

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy has planned to construct a "Tulu Samskritika Bhavan" here at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.5 crore, according to M.K. Seetharama Kulal, president, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, he said that the Government had allotted half-an-acre of land for the academy near Urwa Stores to construct the bhavan. The academy had sought Rs. 1 crore from the Government for the building. The remaining amount would be raised from different organisations, companies and banks.

The academy had constituted a committee to ensure the completion of the bhavan. D. Veerendra Heggade of Dharmasthala would be the honorary president. The committee met here on Monday and took five decisions.

The meeting decided that the office of the academy could be housed at the Tulu Samskritika Bhavan. This was because the academy's office was in the building of Mangalore City Corporation since 1994. Hence, the rent was being paid to the corporation. Once the office was shifted to the new building the rent could be saved and the amount could be utilised for the works of the academy.

Awards

Mr. Kulal said that the honorary awards of the academy for 2005 would be presented to three persons at a function at Bappanadu, Mulky, on Saturday.

The awards will be presented to Paltadi Ramakrishna Achar (Tulu literature and research), V. G. Pal (Tulu theatre, cinema) and Aitappa Pambada (Tulu folklore).

The awards will be presented by B. Nagaraja Shetty, Minister for Fisheries. Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, B.A. Vivek Rai, and Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University K.M. Kaveriappa, will participate in it.
