Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A two-day film and television appreciation camp organised by the Kerala Children's Film Society here at Gorky Bhavanam provided an opportunity for children to learn various aspects of filmmaking such as editing, dubbing, script writing and photography.

Veteran film actor Gopi inaugurated the camp on Thursday. The classes were conducted by noted personalities from the field including Shyamaprasad (filmmaking), S.L. Sreekrishnadas (script writing), Jagannathan (drama and films), Vipin Mohan (photography and his experience as a child artist) and Vijayakrishnan (history of filmmaking), who was also the director of the camp.

Nearly 25 children in the age group of 7 to 16 years from various schools in the city took part in the camp.

The camp also included visits to leading studios such as Chitranjali, Divya and to film and serial locations.

A screening of select children's films such as `Charlie Chaplin' and `Koodaram' was also arranged as a part of the camp.

The screening was followed by a discussion on the films, like the social and historical context in which the film were made and the efforts behind its production.

According to Ratheesh C. Nair, secretary, the society is planning to organise a seminar on `What is children's film?' in the city next month.

"We also have plans to launch an all-India level children's film competition from September.

The films will be screened exclusively for children and awards will be given in the category of best child artist, best film and the best director," he said.

Established in 1976, the Kerala Children's Film Society (KCFS) was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister C. Achutha Menon.

K.P.S. Menon was the first president of the society.

The society is functioning under the support of the General Education Department of the State.

The society provides clean and healthy value-based entertainment for children and also fulfils their psychological and educational needs through the medium of films.

The mission of the society is to facilitate promotion of children's films by encouraging, strengthening and spreading the children's film movement all over the State.
