Karwar: A special police team has arrested three persons allegedly involved in the theft of idols, at Angadibail village of Ankola taluk and recovered from them an idol of Anjaneya Devaru. Superintendent of Police S. Ravi said here on Friday that the arrested were identified as Krishna alias Sharad of Karavali Shiroor village in Kundapur taluk, Ramachandra Kolla Naik of Savantur village near Hosanagara in Shimoga district and Uday Ganapati Gunaga of Angadibail. Three other members of the gang are absconding. Mr. Ravi said the idol was stolen from Kiri Manjeshwara Veera Hanumana Temple in Nagur village near Baindoor in Udupi district in June 2005. The panchaloha (five metals) idol had high antique value. The three-foot tall idol weighed 72.5 kg. The estimated value of the idol was Rs. 4 lakh, although its value in the international market is likely to be much higher. The police conducted a raid on the village following a tip-off that the idol was hidden in Angadibail and the gangsters were trying to strike a deal to sell it. He said some more local people might have been involved in the crime.
