Probe ordered into Manipur killings

Correspondent

IMPHAL: A general strike called in Manipur in protest against the gunning down of two persons in Churachandpur district on Monday night by Assam Rifles was called off on Friday morning following an agreement between Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and a committee. An officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector-General will hold an inquiry.

After the accord, family members took away the bodies of Khundrakpam Ranjit, a gram panchayat member, and Ningthoujam Shyamkanhai, vice- principal of a school.

Retaliatory fire

It is said that when a team of 3Assam Rifles intercepted and signalled a van to stop, shots were fired at the personnel.

In retaliatory fire, both the driver and a passenger were killed. The action committee called the strike, saying Ranjit and Shyamkanhai, both of Khangabok in Thoubal district, had nothing to do with any armed movement.
