Sahitya Akademi prize for L. Basavaraju

Bangalore: The Central Sahitya Akademi has selected Kannada poet L. Basavaraju for the Bhasha Samman for 2005. Eighty-six-year-old Dr. Basavaraju has been selected for the award in recognition of his research into classical and medieval Kannada literature.

He has edited with erudite commentaries classics such as `Adipurana' and `Vikramarjuna Vijayam' of Pampa, considered the first and greatest poet of Kannada. Dr. Basavaraju is also known for his works on Vachana Sahitya. He has received several awards, including that of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy in 1977 and the Sahitya Akademi prize for translation to Kannada, in 2000. — Special Correspondent

Load shedding for

20 days from May 15

BANGALORE: Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. has warned that there will be unscheduled load shedding for 20 days from May 15. The load shedding is on account of urgent repairs to the water conducting system between Linganamakki and Talakalale balancing reservoir being undertaken by KPTCL.

An official release said that during this period generation at Sharavathy generating station will be limited to 12 to 14 million units a day. To overcome the shortage in generation of five to seven million units daily as well as to maintain grid frequency and stability, "unscheduled load shedding will be resorted to," the release said. — Staff Reporter

Elections to fill gram panchayat vacancies

Udupi: The State Election Commission will hold elections to fill in 32 vacant gram panchayat seats in Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala taluks on June 4.

In a press release issued here on Friday, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said May 24 was the last date for filing of nominations for these seats. Election officers would accept nomination papers from May 17 to 24 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the respective gram panchayats. The nomination papers would be scrutinised on May 25. The last date for withdrawal of nominations was May 27. Votes would be counted on June 5, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

Cabinet panel looks into backlog vacancies

BANGALORE: A Cabinet subcommittee headed by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Friday reviewed the performance of as many as 16 departments in filling the 733 backlog vacancies for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates.

The subcommittee took serious note of the absence of officials from the Public Works Department from Gulbarga division despite prior notice.

Briefing presspersons after the meeting, Minister for Social Welfare Balachandra Jarkiholi said the Government would not tolerate any delay in filling the vacant posts. — Staff Reporter

Ex-servicemen's rally on Monday

BANGALORE: An ex-servicemen's rally to discuss pension and re-employment issues will be held at the ASC Centre and College on Airport Road here on May 15, a press release by the Ministry of Defence said.

The rally is being organised for the benefit of ex-servicemen, war widows, families of battle casualties from Bangalore Urban and Rural, Tumkur and Kolar districts. Various departments such as Defence Pension, Disbursement Office and Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement will have stalls at the rally.

BANGALORE: All India Radio will broadcast an award-wining programme, `Maha Purnima,' on all stations between 8.35 a.m. and 9.05 a.m. on Saturday. The programme is being broadcast in celebration of Buddha Purnima. — Staff Reporter

Man held, jewellery recovered

BELLARY: The police have arrested a man and recovered jewellery worth Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh in cash from him. The police said the accused V.P.N.C. Jain of Davangere was moving around in a suspicious manner on District Stadium Road. When the police questioned him he did not reply properly. The police found the cash and jewellery when they searched the bag he was carrying. A case has been registered. — Staff Correspondent

Panchaloha idol recovered, 3 held

Karwar: A special police team has arrested three persons allegedly involved in the theft of idols, at Angadibail village of Ankola taluk and recovered from them an idol of Anjaneya Devaru. The police said here on Friday that the arrested were identified as Krishna alias Sharad of Karavali Shiroor village in Kundapur taluk, Ramachandra Kolla Naik of Savantur village near Hosanagara and Uday Ganapati Gunaga of Angadibail. Three other members of the gang are absconding. The idol was stolen from Kiri Manjeshwara Veera Hanumana Temple in Nagur near Baindoor in June 2005. — Correspondent

HUBLI: The Karnataka Pradesh Samajwadi Party's Hubli-Dharwad Unit has appealed to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation to install a bronze statue of twelfth century reformer Akkamahadevi in the twin cities.A delegation of the party led by Govindraj Harivan, C.G. Committee set up

MYSORE: The University of Mysore has set up a committee to prevent and inquire into cases of harassment of women. The committee has been formed following the Supreme Court's order to protect women against harassment at workplace, and would look after the interest of women in colleges and institutions coming under Mysore University. A release said any girl student or women employee of the university could lodge complaints on harassment with the Registrar or with the committee. — Staff Correspondent

Mass marriage

on May 15

Madikeri: The Al-Madeena Committee, Kodagu branch, will conduct a mass marriage involving 10 economically backward Muslim couples at the Cauvery Hall here on May 15. Secretary of the publicity wing of the committee M.E. Mohammad, said here on Friday that the committee had received 30 applications this year, of which 10 were picked. This is the third year the committee was organising mass marriage in Kodagu. An expenditure of Rs. 5 lakh would be incurred for the marriages, which was being mobilised from the donors in the district, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Total sanitation programme

Madikeri: President of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat H.S. Ashok on Friday called upon the people in rural areas to give importance to hygiene and sanitation to improve quality of life. He was addressing members of the Kalakeri-Nidugane gram panchayat, near here, at the valedictory of the "Total Sanitation Programme" of the Government, coinciding with a seminar on the ill-effects of consuming liquor and smoking. The programme was organised by the State Temperance Board, Department of Information, Zilla Panchayat, Directorate of Field Publicity, Mangalore, and the K. Nidugane gram panchayat, an official press release said.

Driver killed in accident

Madikeri: Lokesh, driver of a mini lorry, was killed on the spot when his vehicle collided with a truck at Nanjarayapatna in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu district on Friday, according to information received here.

Lokesh hailed from Periyapatna in Mysore district. Guru and Kannappa who were in the mini lorry were injured. They were admitted to the Kushalnagar hospital. The mini lorry was on its way from Kushalnagar to Siddapur. The Kushalnagar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent
