Corrections and clarifications

  • The sentences in "DMK front headed for a big win in Tamil Nadu" (May 9, 2006, page 1) were: "If this seat prediction proves correct, this will be the first time since 1957 that no single party has a majority on its own. Tamil Nadu looks set to have its first coalition government". A reader says that it should be "since 1952", and not "since 1957". In 1952, the Congress did not win a majority, but decided not to enter into a coalition with other parties. Rajaji became Chief Minister on April 10, 1952, roping in the Commonweal Party to support him. Its leader, M.A. Manickavelu Naicker, joined the Ministry. In 1957, S.S. Ramaswamy Padayachi, leader of the Tamil Nadu Toilers Party, joined the Kamaraj Ministry, when the Congress had a majority. Both these parties merged with the Congress. Yogendra Yadav, Senior Fellow (Professor), Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, clarifies: "I have no disagreement with the reader. The only reason we did not refer to 1952 was that the boundaries of the state were very different. Any comparison would have been very artificial."

  • In "`A reflection of good performance'" (May 12, 2006), a report on the election results in Assam and the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's reactions, the Congress leader in-charge of Assam, Mr. Digvijay Singh and the Chief Minister were wrongly identified in the accompanying PTI photograph. Mr. Digvijay Singh was on the left (not right, as published) while Mr. Gogoi was on the right.

  • Referring to the report "Three national research professors appointed" (May 2, 2006), a reader says that the name of Kariamanikkam Srinivasa Krishnan too has been left out of the names of other national professors that the report listed. K.S. Krishnan, or Sir K.S. (a knighthood for his scientific contributions), is mostly known as co-discoverer of the famous Raman effect, a discovery which brought the Nobel Prize in Physics to India. In 1948, K.S Krishnan became the first Director of the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi.

  • The heading of the AP report "Iraq: April toll reaches 1,100" ("International", May 12, 2006) is misleading. (The report was on the tide of reprisal sectarian killings.) The figure mentioned is for Baghdad alone, as the text says.
