DMDK makes its presence felt in Kancheepuram

It has managed to secure third place in all nine constituencies


  • It secured a total of 1.75 lakh votes in 9 Assembly segments
  • An average of 19,500 votes per constituency in the district

    KANCHEEPURAM: Actor-turned-politician Vijayakant's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam has made its presence felt in the Vanniyar-dominated region of Kancheepuram district by securing a total of 1.75 lakh votes in nine Assembly segments.

    The party, which had received strong criticism and sarcastic comments from certain political outfits particularly the Pattali Makkal Katchi, managed to secure an average of 19,500 votes per constituency in the district.

    The DMDK candidate for Tambaram constituency, K. Dharma, secured 48,522 votes, nearly 18 per cent of total votes polled in favour of the winner, S.R. Raja of DMK (2,69,717 votes). The party recorded its second highest number of votes 30,096 polled in favour of C. Palani in Sriperumpudur segment, which is around 43 per cent of total votes secured by the winning candidate and sitting MLA, D. Yasodha of Congress (70,066 votes).

    Similarly, the DMDK candidate for Alandur, R.Vijayakumar secured 22,860 votes against 1,33,232 votes polled in favour of the winning candidate, T.M.Anbarasan of DMK.

    Other nominees

    The other DMDK nominees who secured more than 10,000 votes are: K.Kannappan (Tiruporur segment) — 19,227 votes; S.Ekambaram (Kancheepuram constituency) — 15,187 votes; S.Kandha Gurunathan (Achirapakkam) — 10,478 and D.Murugesan (Uthiramerur) — 10,333. The DMDK nominees for Madurantakam — D.Gajendran and Chengalpattu — S.Manjula secured 9,885 and 8,852 votes, respectively.

    Third place

    The DMDK managed to secure third place in all the nine constituencies where the ruling party got the second position.

    The sitting AIADMK MLAs and Ministers, B.Valarmathi and V.Somasundaram lost the race to T.M.Anbarasan and K.Sundar, both representing DMK, respectively in the contest for Alandur and Uthiramerur seats. Similarly, another sitting AIADMK MLA, Mythili Thirunavukkarasu of Kancheepuram was defeated by the Pattali Makkal Katchi candidate, `Sakthi' Kamalammal.
