NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday said it would conduct a detailed analysis of its defeat in Kerala and West Bengal, adding that it would not be proper to attribute the defeat to any single factor. To a question whether the decision to align with the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) had contributed to the poor showing in Kerala, party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said, "We do not think it can be attributed to a single factor. We will have a comprehensive study of the results." Though the Kerala results were a matter of concern, the party had improved upon its performance in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls. In regard to West Bengal, he said there were structural and historical reasons. He described the re-election of the Left Front Government as a "remarkable global exception." On the resignation of senior leader Pranab Mukherjee as the Pradesh Congress Committee chief, he said Mr. Mukherjee had taken moral responsibility for the showing. Mr. Singhvi was unable to confirm whether the party had accepted the resignation. He said the poll results were a re-affirmation of the policies and programmes of the United Progressive Alliance and its supporters. "The Congress is happy and proud that it bucked a 30-year-old trend in Assam and emerged as the single largest party and got majority through a pre-poll arrangement," he said. Overall, the results were a "win-win situation" for the Congress and the Left, which was associated with the United Progressive Alliance, he said.
