EPIC FESTIVAL: Chief Minister-designate N. Rangasamy presenting Justice M. Chockalingam with a memento at the Kamban Vizha celebrations in Pondicherry on Friday. Lt Governor M.M. Lakhera (centre) is also seen.

PONDICHERRY: "The Kamba Ramayan is a book that has transcended time. It is an epic that has lessons for people of all ages and stands testimony to family values, friendship, justice and religion," said Justice M. Chockalingam, of Madras High Court.

Speaking at the inaugural of the three-day Kamban Vizha in Pondicherry on Friday, Justice Chockalingam "though in the end of the 20th century, Tamil saw a decline due to influence of other languages, it has survived. In 1938, the Karaikudi Kamban Kazhagam was formed and in 1945 Tamil Isai Sangam was formed." The Lt Governor M M Lakhera, who inaugurated the three-day festival, said that the ideals mentioned in the Kamba Ramayan were applicable even today."

Chief Minister designate N Rangasamy appreciated the efforts of the Kamban Kazhagam, which has been organising the festival for the last 40 years, for the steps to propagate the Tamil language.
