Pondicherry: The Department of Elections found the relevance and importance of opening and operating a special vigilance squad during the polls. The District Election Officer G. Theva Needhi Dhas told newspersons at the press club here on Friday that the vigilance squad also opened a special phone facility with exclusive number 1070 to enable the people to bring to the notice of the election authorities the malpractices and also acts of the trouble makers to vitiate the peaceful poll preparations in the Union Territory. He said that one of the complainants informed the vigilance squad over phone that someone was selling applications, claimingthat he would get houses ready for the tsunami-hit people in coastal villages. A team of the vigilance squad immediately reached the the spot and arrested the person as he was found to be distributing fake applications. Although the purpose of the phone line was to enable the voters to keep vigil on the behaviour and conduct of parties or contestants such information about miscreants was also made available. The officer said that when he was assigned the task of being the District Election Officer he was keen about everything being accomplished without room for any discrepancy or shortcoming. However, the officer said he had received extremely good response, positive cooperation from all sections, enabling good atmosphere to carry out his responsibilities.
