The spirit laden cans siezed by the Karunagapally Police from a house at Sooranad South in Kollam on Friday..(eom)
KOLLAM: More than 12,000 litres of spirit were seized from a rented house at Sooranad South, near here, early on Friday morning, the Karunagapally Police said. Checking a lorry with Tamil Nadu registration shortly after Thursday midnight, during a routine patrol, led to the seizure, the police added. Four persons have been arrested in this connection. When the lorry was stopped for the checking, one of those inside its cabin jumped out and fled. This aroused the suspicion of the police. The vehicle contained empty packing cases of tomato. But there was a strong scent of spirit. The police said that when the driver and the cleaner of the vehicle were questioned, they confessed to have transported the spirit and unloaded it at the house. The duo then led the police to the house. At that time, the spirit cans were being loaded into two cars. The police said 367 cans, each of 35-litre capacity, were seized. The house was rented by Riaz, 32, who was staying there with his wife, Shamla. They were from Kayamkulam. The couple and the driver and the cleaner have been arrested. The police suspect more persons to be involved in the case. A case has been registered.
