KOTTAYAM: Four people died of asphyxiation while cleaning a well at Chemmannar, near Nedumkandom, in Idukki district on Friday. The deceased have been identified as Sabu (40) whose well they were cleaning, Shiju (30) Thankachan (35) and Joy (38). A fifth person has been admitted to a private hospital in a serious condition. According to eyewitnesses, the 40-ft-deep well was in use by the family. It was near full and to clean it, they had brought in a generator set to pump out the water. Three of the people who first entered the well to clean it after pumping out the water lost consciousness and fell into it. Two others who tried to rescue them also lost consciousness and fell into the well. Three of them died on the spot while the fourth one died in hospital. The condition of the fifth person is reported to be serious but stable.
