HYDERABAD: The State's power grid suffered a major setback on Friday due to tripping at Simhadri (Visakhapatnam), Vijayawada and Kothagudem thermal stations to the tune of 1,300 MW. The Transco, as a result, was forced to overdraw from Central stations and enhance the duration of power cuts now in force on different consumers, especially in rural areas, to meet the sudden fall in generation. The tripping was attributed to technical problems. The 500-MW second unit of the NTPC's Simhadri plant which is a major source of supply to the State grid, tripped in the wee hours today following auxiliary supply problem. Later, the third unit (210 MW) of the Vijayawada station went out of order following tube leak. This was in addition to loss of 520 MW due to outrage of Vijayawada station's sixth unit (210 MW) and two other units at Kothagudem. G. Kesava Rao, Transco Director (Transmission), said the Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre, Bangalore, was supplying nearly 600 MW into the southern grid to keep the frequency of the lines at safe minimum level, taking the same from other regions. This was to offset the deficit caused by Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Kesava Rao said.
