Office of profit issue: poll panel directive to TD leaders

Staff Reporter

NELLORE: The Election Commission has asked Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders to furnish information pertaining to five Congress MLAs by May 26 on the `office of profit' issue.

The EC requested petitioners — S. Chandramohan Reddy and Kadiam Srihari — to furnish information on the date of appointment or last appointment of the posts held by five Congress MLAs — Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, Anam Vivekananda Reddy, D. Sridhar Babu, N. Subrahmanyam and J. Krishna Murthy.

Besides, the EC asked them to submit all documents to substantiate their contention that five Congress MLAs had been holding `offices of profit' under the Government within the meaning of the Article 191(1) (a), duly supported by an affidavit.

The TDP leaders on March 31 had filed a petition seeking the Governor to disqualify five Congress MLAs for holding `offices of profit' claiming that their posts were not part of the list of declared exemptions by the Andhra Pradesh Payment of Salaries and Pension and Removal of Disqualification Act.

The Governor then referred the petition to the EC on April 11 for its opinion.

Against this backdrop, the EC had directed us to furnish relevant information with regard to five Congress MLAs including their residential addresses, Mr. Chandramohan Reddy told The Hindu on Friday.
